Coffee is a high-value perennial crop grown across the tropics. Proper fertilization directly impacts yield, bean size, cup quality, and plantation longevity. This guide covers the complete fertilizer strategy for coffee production.

Coffee Nutrient Requirements

A productive coffee plantation (2-3 tons of green beans per hectare) removes approximately:

  • Nitrogen (N): 200-300 kg/ha/year
  • Phosphorus (P2O5): 50-80 kg/ha/year
  • Potassium (K2O): 150-250 kg/ha/year
  • Magnesium (Mg): 20-40 kg/ha/year
  • Calcium (Ca): 50-100 kg/ha/year

Nitrogen for Vegetative Growth

Nitrogen drives leaf area development, shoot growth, and overall tree vigor. For coffee, apply Urea 46-0-0 or Ammonium Sulphate in 2-3 split applications during the rainy season. Ammonium sulphate is particularly beneficial because it also supplies sulphur and slightly acidifies the soil — both favorable for coffee.

Phosphorus for Root and Flower Development

Phosphorus is critical for root establishment in young coffee and for flower/fruit set in bearing trees. Apply DAP 18-46-0 at the start of the rainy season to ensure phosphorus availability during flowering and fruit development.

Potassium for Bean Quality

Potassium is essential for cherry development, bean density, and cup quality. For premium coffee, use SOP 0-0-50 (sulphate of potash) instead of MOP, as coffee is chloride-sensitive. SOP provides potassium without the chloride that can accumulate in soil and reduce bean quality.

Recommended Fertilizer Programs

Young Coffee (Year 1-2)

  • At planting: 200g DAP + 100g MOP per tree mixed into planting hole
  • 3 months after planting: 100g Urea per tree
  • 6 months after planting: 100g NPK 15-15-15 + 50g MOP per tree
  • Every 3-4 months: 100g NPK 15-15-15 per tree during rainy season

Bearing Coffee (Year 3+)

  • Pre-flowering (start of rains): 200g DAP + 100g SOP per tree
  • Fruit development: 150g Urea per tree
  • Fruit ripening: 100g SOP per tree
  • Post-harvest: 200g NPK 17-17-17 per tree for recovery

Organic Supplementation

Apply 5-10 kg of organic compost per tree per year to improve soil organic matter and water retention. Fish emulsion as a foliar spray (2-3 ml/liter) every 2-3 weeks during active growth provides micronutrients and amino acids that improve cherry set.

Common Fertilizer Mistakes in Coffee

  • Using MOP instead of SOP — chloride accumulation damages roots and reduces cup quality
  • Applying nitrogen too late in the season — delays cherry ripening and reduces cup quality
  • Skipping post-harvest fertilization — trees need nutrients to recover and prepare for next season
  • Over-applying nitrogen — promotes excessive vegetative growth at the expense of cherry production
  • Ignoring soil pH — coffee prefers pH 5.5-6.5; very acidic soils (below 5.0) need lime application
