Shipping fertilizer internationally by container is the most common method for bulk orders. This guide explains container types, loading capacities, packaging requirements, documentation, and everything you need to know about importing fertilizer from Thailand.
Container Types for Fertilizer Shipping
20-Foot Standard Container (20'GP)
The 20-foot container is the standard unit for fertilizer export. Internal dimensions are approximately 5.9m x 2.35m x 2.39m (L x W x H) with a maximum payload of 28,000 kg. For fertilizer, practical loading capacity depends on product density and packaging type:
- 50kg bags (standard): 500-540 bags = 25-27 MT per container
- 25kg bags: 1,000-1,080 bags = 25-27 MT per container
- 1000kg jumbo bags (FIBC): 20-25 bags = 20-25 MT per container
The 25-27 MT range is optimal because it maximizes container payload while staying within road weight limits at both origin and destination ports.
40-Foot Container (40'GP and 40'HC)
While 40-foot containers offer double the volume, they are rarely used for fertilizer because the weight limit is reached long before the container is full. A 40-foot container has a maximum payload of approximately 26,500 kg — less than a 20-foot due to the heavier tare weight. This makes 40-foot containers uneconomical for dense products like fertilizer.
Loading Methods
Loose Bag Loading (Most Common)
50kg bags are loaded manually into the container, stacked in rows from floor to ceiling. This method maximizes payload and is the most cost-effective for standard bagged products. Loading a 20-foot container with 500 bags takes approximately 2-3 hours with a team of experienced loaders.
Palletized Loading
Bags are stacked on wooden or plastic pallets and loaded by forklift. While this method is faster to load and unload, it reduces payload by approximately 10-15% due to pallet weight and space. Palletized loading is preferred when:
- Destination warehouse uses forklift handling systems
- Multiple handling points require easy movement of cargo
- Buyer requires pallet delivery for retail distribution
Jumbo Bag Loading
1000kg FIBC (Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container) bags are loaded by forklift or crane. Typically 20-25 jumbo bags fit in a 20-foot container. This method is ideal for bulk buyers who have bag-breaking equipment or silos at destination.
Packaging for Ocean Freight
Fertilizer packaging must withstand:
- Moisture: Ocean containers experience condensation during transit (container rain). PE liners inside PP woven bags prevent moisture ingress.
- Compression: Bags stacked 20 layers high must withstand the weight above without bursting.
- Handling: Manual and mechanical handling at loading, transshipment, and destination ports.
- UV Exposure: If stored outdoors at any point, UV stabilization prevents bag degradation.
Thai Fertilizer uses 75-80 GSM PP woven bags with 30-40 micron PE liner as standard export packaging. This specification meets international shipping standards and provides adequate protection for 12-18 months of storage.

- NPK 17-17-17: 25-27 MT per 20ft
- NPK 20-20-20: 25-27 MT per 20ft
- DAP 18-46-0: 25-27 MT per 20ft
- MAP 12-61-0: 25-27 MT per 20ft
- MOP 0-0-60: 25-27 MT per 20ft
- SOP 0-0-50: 25-27 MT per 20ft
- Ammonium Sulphate: 25-27 MT per 20ft
Shipping Documentation
Every fertilizer export shipment from Thailand includes:
- Commercial Invoice: Details of products, quantities, prices, and payment terms
- Packing List: Detailed breakdown of bags per container, weights, and marks
- Bill of Lading (B/L): Legal document of title issued by shipping line
- Certificate of Origin: Issued by Thai Chamber of Commerce confirming Thai origin
- Certificate of Analysis (COA): Lab-confirmed nutrient content for each batch
- Phytosanitary Certificate: Required by some importing countries
- Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS): Safety information for each product
- Fumigation Certificate: If wooden pallets are used
Shipping Routes and Transit Times
Thai Fertilizer ships from Laem Chabang Port (Bangkok's primary deep-water port). Transit times to major markets:
- East Africa (Mombasa, Dar es Salaam): 18-25 days
- West Africa (Lagos, Tema, Abidjan): 25-35 days
- South Asia (Mumbai, Chennai, Colombo): 10-18 days
- Southeast Asia (Ho Chi Minh, Jakarta, Manila): 7-14 days
- Middle East (Jebel Ali, Jeddah): 12-20 days
- South America (Santos, Callao): 30-45 days
- Europe (Rotterdam, Hamburg): 28-35 days
Shipping Terms (Incoterms)
FOB (Free on Board) Bangkok
Thai Fertilizer delivers the container to Laem Chabang Port and handles all Thai export customs. The buyer arranges and pays for ocean freight and destination costs. FOB gives buyers control over shipping line selection and freight rates.
CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) Destination Port
Thai Fertilizer arranges and pays for ocean freight and marine insurance to the buyer's destination port. The buyer handles import customs clearance and inland transport. CIF is simpler for buyers who prefer a single supplier to manage logistics.
Container Inspection and Loading Supervision
Thai Fertilizer provides photographic documentation of every container loading, including:
- Empty container condition photos before loading
- Progress photos during loading showing bag arrangement
- Final loaded container photos before door closure
- Container seal number documentation
Third-party inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas, or FIGICO Intl is available at the port of loading for buyers who require independent verification of product quality, quantity, and packaging.
Minimum Order Quantity
Our standard MOQ is 1 x 20ft container (25-27 MT depending on product). Trial orders of 10 MT can be arranged with adjusted pricing. Bulk orders of 100+ MT qualify for volume discounts and priority production scheduling.
